Streets, green spaces, and services may create the physical framework of a neighbourhood - but it is the social infrastructure that truly transforms a collection of houses into a community. Homes are where families live, and it is in the spaces around and in between those houses that community lives and grows.
That’s why, in 2021, we partnered with Neighbourhood Network to launch Home Together: a dedicated programme designed to nurture connection, belonging, and resilience across new Cairn-built estates. Three years on, the results show just how vital this investment in people is.

Why Social Infrastructure Matters
Physical infrastructure is well understood in development - footpaths, lighting, playgrounds, and transport links. But the more complex challenge is cultivating the everyday social ties that make a place feel like home.
As one Whitethorn resident and Home Together participant put it:
“It gave us the confidence to reach out to each other and get to know neighbours… Now you see everyone is actually chatting and sitting down and taking the time.”
This simple but profound shift - neighbours recognising, supporting, and trusting each other - is what Home Together was built to achieve.
Measurable Impact
By the end of 2024, Home Together has reached over 2,300 homes across ten Cairn estates, with more than 1,000 adults and children actively participating this year alone.
The data tells a powerful story:
- 93% of residents reported their neighbourhood feels friendlier since joining the programme.
- 73% feel safer in their estates after taking part in community events.
- In Whitethorn, residents’ average familiarity with neighbours rose from 4.6 to 6.4 in just two years.
- In Mariavilla, Elsmore, and Glenheron - where the programme has already graduated - 91% of residents are now comfortable sharing a house key with a neighbour, compared to just 15% at the beginning.
These are not just numbers; they are signs of real trust, resilience, and shared identity growing within our neighbourhoods.

Resident-Led, Future-Proofed
One of the most powerful aspects of Home Together is that it is not a top-down initiative. The programme is designed to be resident-driven. Cairn and Neighbourhood Network act as catalysts, sparking social engagement and helping establish structures such as Residents’ Associations. Once the framework is in place, the programme is handed over to the community itself.
This gives Home Together real longevity and self-automation. What might traditionally take decades to emerge organically - the sense of safety, friendship, and mutual support that defines a strong community - is accelerated into just a few years

Everyday Connections, Lasting Communities
From coffee socials and summer gatherings to first aid training and residents’ association workshops, Home Together is about creating opportunities for people to meet, share, and collaborate.
As one resident from Glenheron reflected:
“There has been this unexpected gift of community… I work in mental health and wellbeing and I can see loneliness can be a killer - so if I can do my bit, bring what you’ve got, show up, be present, sometimes that’s all you’ve got.”
These connections don’t just enrich daily life - they build the resilience and mutual support that every thriving community needs.
Looking Ahead
The journey is only beginning. In it's next phase, Home Together will expand to new estates in Cork and Kilkenny, and a formal research partnership between Cairn and Neighbourhood Network will deepen our understanding of how to create communities that last.
For us, the lesson is clear: homes may be built in months, but communities are built over years. While infrastructure lays the foundation, it is in the shared spaces - the streets, the greens, the in-between places - where connection takes root and community truly flourishes.
At Cairn, we are proud to invest in both.
